Passing various resolutions at the end of the public hearing organised by Evidence, an NGO, here on Saturday, the members led by its Executive Director A. Kadir said that with rising crimes against women and children, it was all the more essential to expedite the cases and render justice to the victims.

The recent amendments to the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act mentioned the need for establishing courts and appointing judicial officers for this purpose. By doing so, the crimes may decline and law violators would get punishment.

The meeting pointed out how some officers in the police department “failed” in their duty by misleading the complainants and dodged the petitioners under some pretext or the other. Such officers should not only be booked for their negligence, but also placed under suspension and remanded in judicial custody as per the amendments.

Presently, the victims families were compensated Rs. 8.25 lakh for any heinous crime, like murder. This relief was insufficient.

The government should enhance it to Rs. 20 lakh and also provide a government job or give Rs. 20,000 per month or issue a patta for a 10 acre agricultural land with which the families can survive.
